After many years on the forbidden fruit list, the Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R is fair game in America. Lamphear's car came to the U.S. through a private broker, and it's pretty stunning, a high-mileage chassis with an upgraded interior and track-ready chassis tuning, plus a low-mileage, tricked-up engine. This was the car that shifted her focus, leading to the purchase of her first R32 GT-R and a new passion for all-wheel-drive, inline-six drivelines.
Inside, you get leather upholstery with faux suede inserts, dual-zone automatic climate control, a heated eight-way power driver seat (four-way for the front passenger), a manual tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a rearview camera, an 8-inch touchscreen, a navigation system, voice controls, NissanConnect mobile-app integration, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and a six-speaker Bose audio system with active noise cancellation and enhancement, USB connectivity, and satellite and HD radio.
It also added acoustic trim and glass and active noise cancellation, which damp the GT-R's august amounts of drivetrain noise by about 10 decibels. The rear of the car keeps the GT-R's familiar circular tail lamps, but carves out the volume around them - giving a floating look.
Nods to the car's performance pedigree include a driver-selectable three-mode suspension system, Recaro sport seats. Premium, high-octane fuel required like most supercars. Nissan rightly realized the brilliance of the Skyline concept, kept the Skyline” moniker around for successive cars, and continued to develop the engine—and that engine is magnificent.
The overall cabin layout of the Nissan GT-R feels a bit dated now compared to the last model. The interiors, for example, you can't compare them with the zenki (early cars, in JDM buff speak) cars. Anyone who has ever tiptoed into an online car forum will recognize the great battles that have been fought over the relative greatness of Skyline-badged models in comparison with other (lesser?) cars.
Like so many other performance cars of the era, the GT-R was born to compete in Group A motorsport. The standard GT-R's aluminum trunk lid is swapped out for a full carbon fiber panel and additional spot welds Nissan Skyline GT-R and adhesive help strengthen the chassis.
